At Mayfield, we are committed to delivering comprehensive and patient-focused private healthcare services. This policy outlines our approach to referrals, emphasising the importance of careful selection, patient involvement, and collaboration with both private and NHS healthcare providers.
How we refer our patients for further investigation or treatment
Consultation-based referrals:
- Referrals will generally be made following a thorough consultation with the patient, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of their medical history, current health status, and specific healthcare needs.
- Referrals made outside of a consultation will be subject to an additional fee to cover the cost of the clinician's involvement
Private secondary consultants:
- Dependent on the patient's preferences, we will generally issue referrals to private secondary consultants. We carefully maintain a selected list of secondary care professionals, with a focus on their experience, expertise and commitment to high-quality patient care.
- Generally our consultants are based in Oxford or London - however, on request we can find an expert in another region.
NHS referrals:
- When appropriate, and in consultation with the patient, referrals can be made back into the NHS for further investigations, specialist consultations, or ongoing care.
Informed decision-making:
- Patients will be actively involved in the decision-making process regarding referrals. They will be provided with information about available options, including private consultants and NHS services, enabling them to make informed choices aligned with their preferences and needs.
Collaboration with consultants:
- We seek to maintain communication with private secondary consultants to ensure a smooth and coordinated approach to patient care.
- Relevant medical information, including patient history and diagnostic results, will be shared with the consultant to facilitate a comprehensive and informed consultation.
Comprehensive Referral Records:
- All referral decisions and details will be documented in the patient's medical records, including the clinical rationale, discussions with the patient, and information about the chosen private consultant or NHS service.
- Records of communication with private consultants and NHS services will be maintained to ensure transparency and facilitate coordinated patient care.
