Our experienced mental health team includes both clinical psychologists and psychiatrists who are qualified professionals able to help you with a range of psychological concerns.

Our Clinical Psychologists

At Mayfield Clinic Oxford, Dr. Schnack and Dr. Kelly provide high-quality, evidence-based psychological treatments for non-urgent mental health concerns.

Our Psychiatrist

Dr. Coffey, our specialist psychiatrist, offers expert assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions. As a medically qualified doctor specialising in psychiatry, Dr. Coffey can prescribe medication when appropriate and provide comprehensive psychiatric care.

Booking an Appointment

To book an appointment with our mental health professionals, you will require a referral, either from a Mayfield Clinic GP or from your existing GP. Our team will consider each referral carefully prior to acceptance, to ensure it falls within the scope of our work, and that it meets our service requirements.

Please be advised that we are only able to accept new patients who reside in the local areas of Oxfordshire, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire. To submit your referral, please select 'Book now' and follow the steps to book an initial appointment with one of our mental health specialists.

What can we help with?

We offer comprehensive mental health support through our team of clinical psychologists and psychiatrist. While our clinical psychologists are an excellent starting point for most mental health concerns, our psychiatrist Dr. Coffey provides specialized medical assessment, diagnosis and treatment when needed.

Mood disorders

Our team can help with conditions including depression and major depressive disorder, bipolar affective disorder and cyclothymia, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), as well as mania and hypomania.

Eating disorders

Our specialists can support you with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and body image concerns.

Anxiety disorders

We provide evidence-based treatment for generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), health anxiety and illness anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Other mental health difficulties

Our mental health team can also assist with work-related stress and burnout, relationship difficulties, sleep disorders, personality disorders, psychosis and schizophrenia (under Dr. Coffey's care), and medication review and management (via Dr. Coffey).

Sleep-wake disorders

We provide comprehensive assessment and treatment for insomnia, circadian rhythm sleep disorders, sleep-related breathing disorders, and parasomnias, helping to restore healthy sleep patterns essential for mental wellbeing.

Perinatal mental health

Our specialists offer support for mental health concerns during pregnancy and postpartum, including perinatal depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder related to childbirth.

Neurodevelopmental conditions

Dr. Coffey, our psychiatrist, can provide comprehensive assessment and diagnosis for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Trauma and stress-related disorders

Our team provides specialized care for trauma-related conditions including acute stress disorder, adjustment disorders, and complex trauma responses, utilizing evidence-based approaches to processing traumatic experiences and developing effective coping strategies.

Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders

Beyond OCD, we offer treatment for body dysmorphic disorder, hoarding disorder, trichotillomania (hair-pulling), and excoriation (skin-picking) disorder, using specialized cognitive and behavioral techniques.

Addiction and substance use disorders

Dr. Coffey can assess and treat alcohol use disorder, substance use disorders, and behavioral addictions such as gambling disorder, working collaboratively with our psychologists to address both the addiction and any underlying mental health concerns.

How do I book a psychologist appointment?

New patient psychology appointments can be booked above.

Can Dr Schnack see patients of any age?

Unfortunately not. Dr Schnack can only see patients aged 16 years old and above.

Can I reschedule my appointment?

Appointments can be rescheduled up to 24 hours in advance via your online account. Within 24 hours, appointments cannot be rescheduled.

Do consultations include a written report?

Our clinicians do not routinely provide written reports of their findings. If a report is required, this will be billed at the clinician's standard hourly rate.

How do I know whether I need to see a psychologist or a psychiatrist?

If you're unsure which specialist would be most appropriate, we recommend starting with a consultation with one of our GPs who can assess your needs and provide the most suitable referral. Generally, if medication might be beneficial or if you require a formal diagnosis of certain conditions like ADHD, our psychiatrist Dr. Coffey would be recommended.

What is the difference between a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Clinical psychologists specialize in psychological therapies and behavioral interventions, while psychiatrists are medically qualified doctors who can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication when appropriate. Dr. Coffey, our psychiatrist, can provide both medication management and psychiatric assessment.

Do I need a GP referral to see a mental health professional at Mayfield Clinic?

Yes, you will require a referral either from a Mayfield Clinic GP or from your existing GP. Our team will review each referral carefully to ensure we can provide appropriate care for your needs.

How will it work?

Our mental health interventions always begin with a robust assessment. We consider how past and present factors contribute to the development of mental health conditions.

Upon the conclusion of this assessment, our team will utilise a range of evidence-based interventions that are clinically proven, in line with national treatment guidelines, and suited to the individual profile and presenting problem.
