Polio is a serious infection which in very extreme cases can cause paralysis. As you may have seen in the news there is concern resulting from Poliovirus isolates being found in sewage samples in London.
Polio is a serious infection which in very extreme cases can cause paralysis. There have been no confirmed cases of paralysis from polio in the UK for nearly 40 years due to a successful vaccination programme.
But polio has been reported in New York state in an unvaccinated male, and an unvaccinated child has been reported as having polio with paralysis in Israel.
The polio vaccine is part of the NHS routine childhood vaccination schedule and is given to children regularly from the ages of 8 weeks to 14 years old. In response to the current situation the JCVI (body making decisions about immunisation in the UK) have advised that an additional dose of a polio containing vaccine should be given to all children under the age of 10 who are living in London. This will boost antibody levels to polio and the hope is that it will reduce the risk of transmission of the virus.
Should you be worried and would like a polio vaccine for either yourself of your child, Mayfield Clinic has polio vaccines in stock and appointments available to administer the vaccine.
All polio containing vaccines have the same polio content and we will be giving the following vaccines:
